چکیده

Regenerative and reparatory medicine is one of the most attractive therapeutic options of the coming years, and the power to replace entire damaged organic structures or organs is, in our opinion, the most innovative possibility in this field. In relation to the creation of bioartificial organs in particular, hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, ovaries, intestines, pancreas and corneas have already been generated, all in the experimental field. However the most innovative development is, undoubtedly, that these experiments have already reached the clinical field, since in two patients with tracheal stenosis due to different causes, it has been possible to replace the affected trachea with a new one created bioartificially; it was shown that after transplant of the new organ, both patients recovered their respiratory capacity and were consequently able to resume their normal life. New Phase of Growth for Xenogeneic-Based Bioartificial Organs

In this article, we examine the advanced clinical development of bioartificial organs and describe the challenges to implementing such systems into patient care. The case for bioartificial organs is evident: they are meant to reduce patient morbidity and mortality caused by the persistent shortage of organs available for allotransplantation. The widespread introduction and adoption of bioengine...

A theoretical approach to zonation in a bioartificial liver

Bioartificial livers have yet to gain clinical acceptance. In a previous study, a theoretical model was utilized to create operating region charts that graphically illustrated viable bioartificial liver configurations. On this basis a rationale for the choice of operating and design parameters for the device was created. The concept is extended here to include aspects of liver zonation for furt...

Integration of Transcriptomic, Proteomic and Metabolomic Profiles in Microfluidic Bioartificial Organs Applied to Mechanistic Interpretation of Acetaminophen Injury

Microfluidic bioartificial organs allow the reproduction of in vivo-like properties such as cell culture in a 3D dynamical micro environment [1]. In this work, we established a method and a protocol for performing the integration of transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic profiles in order to investigate xenobiotic toxicity. For that purpose, we present the example of the analysis of HepG2/C3...

Brasileiro de Engenharia Biomédica – CBEB 2014 1 Mechanical properties of decellularized lungs

The matrix of decellularized organ retains the three-dimensional architecture and biochemical composition, as well as the original tissue microvasculature. This propertie make the decellularized lung very promising for the generation of functional bioartificial organs. This study aims to describe an experimental animal model that allows to analyze the behavior of the mechanical properties of de...

Lentivector-mediated transfer of Bmi-1 and telomerase in muscle satellite cells yields a duchenne myoblast cell line with long-term genotypic and phenotypic stability.

Conditionally immortalized human cells are valuable substrates for basic biologic studies, as well as for the production of specific proteins and for the creation of bioartificial organs. We previously demonstrated that the lentivector-mediated transduction of immortalizing genes into human primary cells is an efficient method for obtaining such cell lines. Here, we used human muscle satellite ...
